The Charm of Rural Spain

The Charm of Rural Spain

Once in a while you want a break from the overcrowded cities, busy life and traffic. And no matter where you are in Spain you can escape into the incredibly charming rural setting just in a matter of hour or two (or even less than that).

I got very inspired by the last photo shoot that our beautiful client Albina Dontsova (@donalbik) made in our pieces at her rural residence near Barcelona, so I wanted to share with you some of my favorite insights on just how wonderful Spain is also outside the cities.

There are countless destinations to explore all around Spain and in 6 years I haven´t even seen all just around Barcelona. But I thought it would be a great idea to start sharing with you every bit about wonderful places that I am lucky to visit and see. And this will be an introduction to the new serios of "Lemiché Getaways", so don´t forget to subscribe to our updates (below this post) to stay tuned in!

First of all, some general tips. The best way to get around is by car and there are lot of very easy-to-use rental car and car sharing services available in every city (you will find them at the airports, central train and bus stations, or simply online).

It is relatively easy to get around Spanish roads, but I would still recommend to get a local pre-paid SIM card to have internet connection for your GPS navigation. The fastest way to get to your destination would be by highways, but if you choose the smaller and slower roads you will be rewarded by some incredible views and very charming surroundings (they´re also usually toll-free, which would be an additional bonus). Some of the best slow roads go along stunning Costa Brava (definitely worth your time), vineyards and fruit orchards, palm and cypress studded stucco houses - you will feel like you´re on a set of some movie...

And when it comes to choosing where to drive, you will have a waste number of options. In summer you might want to drive along the coast and stop at small isolated beaches between the rocky cliffs (called "calas") with cristal clear azure waters and incredibly beautiful landscapes.

Or you can choose to drive inland to one of the wondrous medieval towns frozen in time (Pals, Begur, Peratallada and Besalú are among my favorites, but it is best to go there in "low" winter season to avoid tourist crowds). Even though these towns are small, make sure to plan enough time for your visit. You will find yourself stopping every few meters to have a closer look at some incredible detail of ancient living preserved in the cobblestoned streets, walls and doorsteps of the town - the details you´d usually only see behind protective glass in a museum. Here you can touch and even walk on them, and what is even more astonishing is that local people actually still live in most of those medieval houses!

And if you´d rather like to enjoy a peaceful natural landscapes of rural Spain - head along the fantastic vineyards and fruit orchards routes. There are a lot of options to choose from, but the best would be to plan your destination according to the current season.

In winter you should not miss the chance to celebrate calçotada - a gastronomic harvesting festival for leeks, which are then slow-cooked on the coals right there on the fields and served with special sauce and local wine (it is very tasty!)  In spring, for example, you could plan to spend your day in the mesmerizing blooming paradise of peach orchards in Aitona. In summer you can choose among many fruit farms to visit and even help out if you´d like to stay there a bit longer and have a full hand-on experience. And in autumn you can take the chance to experience the harvesting process and then have an amazing dinner at the local winery at sunset overlooking the beautiful vineyards spread below the mountains, all accompanied of course by the best local wines.
